This project was created and executed in collaboration with Benjamin Stern, Avi Rudich, Elton Spektor, Tom Scherlis, and Abel Tesfaye for 16–375 Robotics for Creative Practices at Carnegie Mellon University. This was a line designed for Lunar Gala 2020 in collaboration with Arden Wolf and technical help from Jake Zimmer. This line pokes fun at our generation’s relationship with consumerism and social media while featuring embedded custom LED hardware.

Modular and flat sneaker concept informed by sneaker culture, sustainable practices and 3D technological influence.

Our goal is to develop the way people view their shoes using modular parts and creating an ongoing relationship between consumers and suppliers. We address this by printing the parts of the sole and the upper separately so the consumer can decide how to match them together. This makes available to the consumer an adaptability and customization to fit their own needs.

Developer or designer? Perhaps both? This is how I coded my portfolio site and how sheer stubbornness got me stuck in a developer hole, having me consider digital UX and taking opportunities as a front-end developer.

Given my background in both design and engineering, it felt simple and natural to take on the challenge of coding my portfolio. Learning from my surroundings and resources on the internet, I have always been interested in coding my own site, despite only having experience with object-oriented programming before this.

After a few botched attempts at working together again for a hackathon, we finally coordinated to come together for TartanHacks 2018 a year later. Lucas, Arka, Claire, and I came together last week to brainstorm ideas for the hackathon, hoping to work with both hardware and software again. Several empty coffee cups and three location changes later, the group came up with a website building application. At the time, all of us were(on some level) coding our personal websites, despite having little to no experience with html, js, and css.

As we enter the final leg of our first year design curriculum, we were tasked to choose a space and consider opportunities for intervention and redesign. This is an opportunity to collaborate, develop our behavioral research methods and better understand people within different contexts.

Location

The University Center third floor lounge is a shared student space where people often come to study, collaborate, and relax. It consists of consists of two main areas, the collaborative space and the graduate lounge, and has multiple entrances.

We began our documentation around 6pm on a Monday afternoon from different viewpoints within the environment to get a preliminary idea of behavioral flow.

We returned from winter break and were met with our first spring studio assignment. Our objective was to represent and construct a chosen endangered animal form using found/reclaimed packaging material into an articulating movable model.

As a Southern California native, I knew immediately that I wanted to create an aquatic animal of some sort. I began exploring different endangered animals, paying attention to their forms, silhouettes and identifying characteristics.

I had,rather impulsively, decided to join this hackathon at around 2am six days ago. I have been given the honor to work with three very talented and capable Electrical Computer Engineering majors (Claire Chen, Lucas Moiseyev, and Arka Roy). My home department will always be Design, however I am currently pursuing a second major in Mechanincal Engineering. I’ve decided to leap headfirst into this hackathon, approaching it as an opportunity to stretch my legs in the engineering field and in a truly interdisciplinary environment.
